美國民主黨總統候選人奧巴馬在4日舉行的總統選舉中擊敗共和黨對手麥凱恩，當選第56屆美國總統。他將成為美國歷史上首位非洲裔總統。中國國家主席胡錦濤、國務院總理溫家寶5日向美國新當選總統奧巴馬致賀電，祝賀他當選新一屆美國總統。

Premier Wen Jiabao, in his congratulatory message to Obama, said "a sound China-US relationship meets the common aspirations of our two peoples and the need to maintain peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large".

溫家寶總理在致奧巴馬的賀電中表示：良好的中美關系是我們兩國人民的共同期盼，也是維護亞太地區和世界和平、穩定與繁榮的需要。

在上面的報道中，congratulatory message就是“賀電，賀信”的意思，是一種用書面的形式表示祝賀的禮儀文書。Congratulatory在這里做形容詞，意思是expressive of sympathetic pleasure or joy on account of someone's success or good fortune（慶祝的，祝賀的）。congratulatory speech就是指“祝詞”。

另外，有人離世的時候發的“唁電”叫做message of condolence，神秘的“密碼電報”是code message。Message這個詞除了我們常見的“消息，口信”的意思外，還可以表示“啟示，寓意”。如：The play has a serious message.（這部戲有著重要的寓意。）
