China-Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) Science Day took center stage at the China Science and Technology Museum on Wednesday, marking a significant moment of joint commitment to innovation-driven progress and collaborative partnerships.

Hosted by China's Ministry of Science and Technology, the inaugural event underscored the shared dedication to multilateral cooperation.

In collaboration with diplomatic missions representing 21 LAC countries, the gathering brought together a diverse assembly of over 200 participants. Among them were Science and Technology Minister Yin Hejun, Uruguayan Ambassador to China and Dean of the LAC Diplomatic Corps Fernando Lugris, along with delegates from Barbados, Panama, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, and other nations.

Experts engaged in fruitful discussions on enhancing collaboration across various domains such as life sciences, agricultural technology, digital innovation, and bio-breeding. The dialogue also centered on the practical implementation of pivotal initiatives like the China-LAC Technology Transfer Center and the Sustainable Food Innovation Center.

Yin articulated China's commitment to fostering global scientific and technological collaboration based on principles of openness, fairness, and inclusivity. He emphasized the belief that science transcends boundaries and should serve the betterment of all humanity, outlining China's resolve to deepen sci-tech partnerships with LAC countries guided by high-level diplomatic strategies.

Lugris praised China's pivotal role as a key ally, highlighting technological innovation as a fundamental pillar in bilateral relations. He expressed the readiness of LAC nations to expand joint research endeavors and knowledge exchange to drive sustainable development and societal well-being forward.

The event showcased thematic reports on collaborative projects, exhibitions unveiling advancements in green energy and smart agriculture, and guided tours of the museum's state-of-the-art facilities. Notable attendees included officials from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, provincial sci-tech authorities, and representatives from academia and industry.

The China-LAC Science Day stands as a pivotal moment in fortifying the innovation ecosystem between the two regions, aligning with broader objectives to translate scientific progress into tangible benefits for the development of the Global South, authorities said.
